Acupuncture addresses common causes of male infertility such as blood flow stagnation through testicular arteries. This limits the transport and removal of waste which in turns affects the health of the sperm.
Addressing common causes of female infertility, such as hormonal imbalances or the buildup of phlegm in the lower body, both of which affect ovulation
Reducing stress in both partners, which affects hormone levels that can interfere with conception
Fertility acupuncture can also decrease the chances of a miscarriage.
What can I expect during fertility acupuncture treatments?
Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine have been helping couples to conceive for thousands of years. These practices can increase conception rates when used on their own as well as in conjunction with modern fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization.
When you come in for your first treatment, the Shanghai Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture team discusses and reviews all aspects of your fertility goals and issues. They then work with you to develop a customized treatment plan that will best help you to improve your overall ability to have a healthy and happy conception. The team continues to work with you to maintain good health for both you and your baby during your maternity and help with your postnatal care.
The ideal treatment schedule for women is 1-2 times per week with an average of 4-6 months to conceive when using acupuncture to improve fertility. For men, the ideal treatment schedule is once a week and 2-3 months of acupuncture treatment in combination with herbal medicine to see significant improvement in sperm production.

According to a 2017 report by the U.S. Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology (SART), 1 million babies have been born in the United States between 1987 and 2015 through the use of IVF or other assisted reproductive technologies. Acupuncture may help improve chances for having successful IVF transfers. According to a 2018 randomized controlled trial, in which 157 women were randomized to receive either acupuncture treatment three times in the treatment cycle in addition to a standard IVF protocol (n = 79) or no acupuncture treatment (n = 78) in their first or second IVF cycle, a per-protocol analysis revealed that the rate of live births (27/64, 42% vs. 11/69, 15.94%, P = 0.001) and positive pregnancy tests (34/64, 53% vs. 19/69, 27.53%, P = 0.013) were significantly higher in the acupuncture group compared with the control group.
